Weekly Thought:

“Throughout history when society is facing something that is shocking or naturally offensive, reaction generally follows this pattern, first we abhor, then we tolerate and lastly we embrace.” Such is the pattern of recreational drug abuse and all other forms of evil.

In the ‘Just For Teens’ area of our ‘kidsagainstdrugs.com’ web site we encourage questions and comments. I receive two or three a week and this week’s e-zine topic was inspired by one of those comments.

“Brownies”

I was reminded of a popular story about a parent of teens who was approached by his teenage children seeking permission to attend a popular R-rated Movie showing in the area. This is not unusual in most homes but in this particular family there was a ‘No R-Rated Movie’ policy and these teens wished an exemption so they could attend with their friends. They had all sorts of reasons such as ‘it stars so and so who is the most popular star today’, ‘they only have a little bit of bad language’, ‘the nudity is very brief and you don’t see much anyway’, ‘the violence is not that gory and there is only a little bit of blood’ and ‘Dad, everyone says the action is great and the music isn’t that loud.’ “Dad, all my friends have seen it and they are all going to watch it again.”

Well, you know Dad said “NO” anyway and the disappointed teens didn’t get to go to the movie. They rented videos and had pizza and popcorn and invited a few friends to come over instead.

A few days later Dad called the kids into the kitchen and invited them to eat a fresh batch of Brownies he and Mom had just baked. Everyone knew how good Mom’s brownies were. They were so good they were famous and people would come from miles around just for Mom’s brownies. He told them these particular brownies were very special and they had an extra ingredient added just for them.

Dad went on to tell them about his special brownies. “Why, we used all of the best ingredients available. You know, the ones that make brownies taste so good. We cooked them for just the right time and they are gooey and wonderful. Oh the chocolate makes them taste great. Just smell them, it makes your mouth water, don’t you agree?”

“Now let me tell you about a new special ingredient that I added to them. This makes these brownies exciting, wonderful and they’re just for you to enjoy. I don’t imagine that you have ever had brownies with this special ingredient. I went out into the yard and found some dried dog poop and was able to grind it up into a very fine powder and mixed just a small amount into the brownie mix as I stirred it together. Then I baked the brownies and here you are. Don’t they look and smell wonderful, you can’t even smell the dog poop, can you?”

Dad noticed the look of shock and bewilderment on the kids’ faces and quickly said, “There is only just a little bit of dog poop included so it shouldn’t hurt you and you certainly can’t taste it. I made sure the dog poop was totally dried out so it would grind up into the finest powder and I put such a small amount in the mix so you wouldn’t even notice it. I’m positive the dog poop came from our dog and you know how good of a dog he is and how popular he is with all of your friends. Everyone thinks he is the best and most popular dog around so I’m sure they would really like his poop.”

Dad continued to encourage his kids and said, “Come on you two, you know how much you like brownies. I even made a double batch so there would be enough for all of your friends. Go ahead, taste them and eat up. How can anything that smells so good and looks so wonderful be so bad? Once you’ve tried them I’m sure you’ll like them and then you can tell your friends and share your brownies with them. I’m sure they’ll like them so much they will want more. We’ll make another batch so they can come over for brownies again. Just think; we can have everyone of your friends eating our special brownies.”

“Have you ever noticed, when you dig around in the mud with your hands and squeeze it through your fingers and play with it, making mud pies, mud balls and such, the mud doesn’t get handy? Instead, the hands get muddy.” Michael Meredith

Isn’t that a great story? It illustrates how the workers of evil go to great lengths to package and market their products so that we as consumers will give them money. The recreational drug dealers use this technique to get our children to “just try them, they won’t hurt you.” They have many smooth arguments to win our kids over to trying the recreational drugs and they are masters at using peer pressure to get them.

This story also illustrates how wise the Dad was. He was able to use a very simple technique to teach his children a valuable life saving lesson. Of course it took some preparation, some planning and timing and practice. He had a home environment with guidelines and rules and the children trusted his judgment. Because he was so smooth I’m sure this was a common way he had of teaching various lessons of life to his children.

How about you? Are you involved with your children to the point they would come to trust your judgment in matters such as attending an R-rated movie, or trying drugs? Or would they just do it anyway?

What can you do to establish that trusting type of relationship with your kids? Well, our Kids Against Drugs Family Action Training Plan can help you to do that. It has been prepared and put into a format to help parents have all the information and tools they need to be able to sit with their kids in several family council meetings and discuss certain family issues together as a family council. This type of activity has been proven over and over again to be very effective and builds a strong family.

Family Action Tip: Regular family council meetings are the best setting for you to discuss recreational drugs with your kids. Encourage all family members to participate and require everyone to be present at every family council meeting you hold.
